Why Makeup Brushes Are Essential

Quality makeup brushes are the secret to achieving a flawless makeup look. They help with the precise application of products, blending seamlessly, and creating a professional finish. Investing in good brushes means your makeup goes on smoother, looks better, and lasts longer.

PRO TIP: Every skin type is different. Walk into a Sephora or an Ulta and try the brushes first before you purchase them. Get a feel of how they are. I’ve bought brushes that are highly reviewed and are best sellers, however, when I use them, as much as they are great quality, for some reason, my finger length and movements just do not go well with them.

Purchase products that you enjoy to use every day. I’ve also mixed and matched different products on my face. Knowing when I’m in my phase (time of the month!), I use different brushes becuase my skin is different on some days than others.

Must Have Makeup Brushes And Their Uses

Foundation Brush

Why It’s Essential: A foundation brush provides even coverage and a natural finish. It’s perfect for liquid and cream foundations, allowing you to build coverage without streaks.

Best Used With: Liquid and cream foundations

Why It Makes a Difference: This brush ensures your foundation looks flawless and airbrushed, giving you a smooth base for the rest of your makeup.

FOR POWDER FOUNDATION: If you’re like me and powder foundation is your jam, I usually start with a tightly packed concealer brush to go over my undereye and nose area to cover darkness and redness and then I reach for a dome brush to do the rest of my face.

Because I use a packed concealer brush for my undereye and nose area, I get to use only one product (Mac Studio Fix Plus Powder) which is my powder foundation and the coverage on those areas is flawless.

This saved me time and eliminated the need for me to have another product like concealer since my foundation does it all now!

Concealer Brush

Why It’s Essential: A concealer brush allows for precise application, helping you cover blemishes, dark circles, and imperfections with ease.

Best Used With: Liquid and cream concealers

Why It Makes a Difference: This brush helps you apply concealer in targeted areas and blend it seamlessly, ensuring a natural, undetectable finish.

FOR ACNE PRONE SKIN: For my acne-prone and sensitive skin peeps out there, you will get me when I say that for each type and stage of a “pimple;” a different concealer brush is needed.

For the small red bumpy ones, you can get away with a lightly packed brush. For the “already lumpy pimple” a more precise brush is needed as you will have to “go around” the pimple to hide it. I usually use a combination of a round tightly packed brush, then a small blending brush to smoothen the edges, and then finish it off with an eyeliner brush (yes! an eye liner brush!) to go around the edges of the pimple so the “bump” will not be too obvious.

Yes, there is art to covering up acne, and as an acne-prone skin, I can go on and on about tips and tricks!

Powder Brush

Why It’s Essential: A powder brush is fluffy and soft, perfect for applying setting powder without disturbing your foundation.

Best Used With: Loose and pressed powders

Why It Makes a Difference: This brush helps set your makeup and control shine, giving you a matte, flawless finish that lasts all day.

PRO TIP: Always try and remember what powder you are using. Are you looking to only set your makeup? Then a lightly packed brush will do. But if you are looking to add coverage, a tightly packed brush will be more beneficial for you.

Blush Brush (Must Have Makeup Brushes)

Why It’s Essential: A blush brush is designed to pick up the perfect amount of product and blend it onto your cheeks for a natural flush.

Best Used With: Powder blushes

Why It Makes a Difference: This brush distributes blush evenly, ensuring you don’t end up with patchy or overly rosy cheeks.

Contour Brush

Why It’s Essential: A contour brush is angled to fit the hollows of your cheeks, allowing for precise application of contour products.

Best Used With: Powder and cream contour products

Why It Makes a Difference: This brush helps you sculpt and define your features, creating a more chiseled and professional look.

PRO TIP: I personally use a double edge brush that has a contour and blush ends. Saves me application time and space!

FOR NOSE AND JAW LINES: I use a light blending eye shadow brush to line my nose and jaw. The light blending shadow makes the lines less harsh and also more natural. To finish it off, I use an overall face blending brush to make the edges almost disappear. To make it better, I dust off my powder foundation on it lightly to make those lines well hidden.

Highlight Brush

Why It’s Essential: A highlight brush is fluffy and tapered, perfect for applying highlighter to the high points of your face.

Best Used With: Powder and cream highlighters

Why It Makes a Difference: This brush allows for precise and subtle application of highlighter, giving you that perfect glow without looking too shiny.

Eyeshadow Brush

Why It’s Essential: An eyeshadow brush is small and dense, perfect for packing color onto your lids.

Best Used With: Powder eyeshadows

Why It Makes a Difference: This brush helps you achieve vibrant, even color on your eyelids, making your eyes pop.

Blending Brush (Must Have Makeup Brushes)

Why It’s Essential: A blending brush is fluffy and soft, perfect for blending eyeshadow into your crease for a seamless transition of colors.

Best Used With: Powder eyeshadows

Why It Makes a Difference: This brush helps you blend your eyeshadows perfectly, ensuring there are no harsh lines and your eye makeup looks professional.

Angled Eyeliner Brush

Why It’s Essential: An angled eyeliner brush is perfect for creating precise lines and winged eyeliner looks.

Best Used With: Gel, cream, and powder eyeliners

Why It Makes a Difference: This brush gives you control and precision, making it easier to create sharp, defined lines and wings.

PRO TIP: If you want to invest in products that won’t need you to have an eyeliner brush, the better. Usually, products like Benefit have their own liner that works well with their product.

Lip Brush

Why It’s Essential: A lip brush allows for precise application of lipstick, especially in the corners and edges of your lips.

Best Used With: Lipsticks and lip glosses

Why It Makes a Difference: This brush helps you achieve a polished, defined lip look, ensuring your lipstick stays within the lines and looks perfect.

PRO TIP: I’ve also used lip brushes before as concealer brushes for dried-out pimples and they work great!
