How to Feel Abundant and Act Like It While Tackling Debt
The Power of an Abundant Mindset
First things first, mindset is everything. If you constantly think about how much you owe, it’s easy to feel trapped. Instead, focus on what you have and what you’re achieving. Living in abundance means appreciating the present while confidently planning for the future. It’s about seeing opportunities rather than limitations.
Pros of an Abundant Mindset:
- POSITIVITY: Keeps you motivated and less stressed. You get to see the big picture and the long-term benefits of the abundant mindset you are adopting.
- OPPURTUNITY-FOCUSED: Helps you see ways to increase income or save money. Instead of stopping at the problem and sulking, your mind (and the universe!) helps you see opportunities that you would not have otherwise noticed if you weren’t embracing an abundance mindset.
- RESILIENCE: Makes it easier to bounce back from financial setbacks. You understand that life is about solving problems, learning, and evolving. The more you get comfortable with managing and navigating life’s challenges, the more confident you become. Your abundant mindset will help you understand that as much as there are challenges everywhere, there are also solutions everywhere.
Cons:
- OVER-OPTIMISM: You might downplay the seriousness of debt. This is why it is important to speak to a professional to help you assess your situation and manage your debt.
- JUDGEMENT: Others might not understand your positive outlook and criticize you. But you are in control of your life and you know what’s best for you. Short-term discomfort is what it takes to get long-term goals met.
Benefits of Living in Abundance While Tackling Debt
Living in abundance doesn’t mean ignoring your debt; it means addressing it with a positive and empowered mindset. Here’s why it’s beneficial:
- REDUCED STRESS: Focusing on abundance reduces stress, making you more effective in tackling your debt. This is not to say that you don’t feel any stress or anxiety, but you use those emotions as tools to pick you back up and evaluate your situation. It helps you see which areas you can work on and improve.
- INCREASED CREATIVITY: When you feel abundant, you’re more likely to think of creative solutions for managing and reducing debt. Sometimes the ideas don’t come in monetary value, but in creative ways on how to navigate your current situation. Perhaps you can speak to your creditors for a payment arrangement or a schedule of payments.
- BETTER RELATIONSHIPS: A positive mindset improves your interactions with others, making your support system stronger. When you are less stressed and anxious, you start to connect better with your loved ones and the people around you. Even unconsciously, stress and anxiety can spill over our relationship, thus creating unnecessary problems. But when you are in an abundant mindset, you tend to take things less personally in relationships and you can focus on listening and connecting better.
The Role of Mindset and Limiting Beliefs
Your beliefs about money and debt play a significant role in your financial health. Limiting beliefs like “I’ll always be in debt” or “I can’t manage money” can sabotage your efforts. Replace them with empowering beliefs such as “I am capable of managing my finances” and “I am in control of my financial destiny.”
Daily Steps to Practice Abundance
- GRATITUDE JOURNALING: Write down three things you’re grateful for each day. This shifts your focus from what you lack to what you have. Use planners and journals to help you clearly see where you are at, your goals, and your plan of action.
- VISUALIZATION: Spend a few minutes each day visualizing yourself debt-free. Picture the freedom and peace you’ll feel. I know to some people this is some juju and just not *realistic*. However, this is not void of your reality you are helping your brain train yourself to live a reality that you are already working towards anyway. This doesn’t mean this is all you do, but this is to help you perceive yourself differently as you work on your current reality to shift it into the reality you want.
- AFFIRMATIONS: Use positive affirmations like “I am abundant,” “I am financially secure,” and “I attract prosperity.” This is easy to forget and what I usually do is I add these affirmations to my alarm and I can say it out loud to myself so I don’t forget. I have also recently added, “I am funding my dreams..” “I love the way I handle and learn from my mistakes..”; add your own affirmation to cater to your current situation to lead you to where you want to be at.
Environment and Social Influence
Your environment and the people you surround yourself with have a massive impact on your mindset. Positive, supportive friends can uplift you, while negative influences can drag you down.
Tips for a Positive Environment
- DECLUTTER: A tidy space can make you feel more in control and less stressed. Purge. Let go of all the things that you are no longer using. We would say if in the last 6 months, you haven’t used it, they don’t need to be there. Winter and seasonal stuff are okay to be kept, but other than those, other things are just fillers. Create a rotation of clothing and things that you use. Refresh your wardrobe with quiet luxury-style staple items to elevate your look and feel.
- SUPPORTIVE NETWORK: Surround yourself with people who understand your goals and encourage your efforts. As you start this new journey, you will by default, shed some friends. It’s inevitable. It’s a challenge, but it’s necessary. The friends that will get on your new journey with you are the realest. If needed, you can join support groups and organizations that will help you with your new journey. Volunteering for organizations that will help you feel more abundant and live a life of purpose will be beneficial.
- AVOID NEGATIVITY: Limit time with those who criticize or don’t support your new mindset. Kind feedback is great. Especially from people who “gets” your new journey. However, unnecessary judgment and criticism are to be avoided at all times. They are weights that will slow you down. You don’t want to carry these as you go on your journey.

Not everyone will understand your newfound positivity and proactive approach to debt. Here’s how to stay strong:
- STAY FOCUSED: Keep your eyes on your goals and remember why you’re doing this. This does not mean that you shouldn’t reward yourself or deprive yourself, it is important to responsibly celebrate your milestones however small to help you keep going. There are frugal habits you can start that will help you pay debt but still make you feel rich.
- SET BOUNDARIES: Politely but firmly distance yourself from negativity. This is also true with some of your friends who have always eaten out or gone on shopping sprees. This is no longer where you want to be. You want long-term wealth and confidence. You can for sure invest in staple pieces for your wardrobe because this will mean you will not need to keep buying new ones.
- SEEK SUPPORT: Find communities or groups of like-minded individuals who are also on a journey to financial freedom. As mentioned, there are some people in your life that you will have to let go of becuase they no longer fit the person you are planning to be.
