Creating A Travel Itinerary: How To
Research and Prioritize (Creating A Travel Itinerary)
Start by researching the must-see attractions and experiences at your destination. Prioritize your interests to avoid feeling overwhelmed.
Know what you can handle in terms of walking and enjoying. There might be some attractions and destinations that you’d like to stay longer and linger, while there are some that you just want to see and quickly experience.
It will help to know what is around the area that you are visiting. Group attractions within the same area on the same day to save on transportation and to maximize your experience for that day.
Here’s a Canva itinerary template that you can use for free.
Balance Your Days
Plan a mix of must-see sights and leisure time. Avoid overpacking your days with activities to allow flexibility and relaxation.
Adding a *wander around* in your itinerary really helps. This gives you a breather and a moment of spontaneity. This *wander around* time gives you a chance to discover unexpected and unplanned experiences and places.
Use Reliable Resources
Utilize travel guides, blogs, and reputable websites for recommendations and insider tips. Read reviews to make informed decisions about attractions and accommodations.
GetYourGuide has been one of our go-to places to find destinations and experiences with reviews.
Optimize Transportation
Choose cost-effective transportation options such as public transit passes or walking tours to explore the city like a local.
Public transportation might not be for everyone. Taking Uber and using their PIN feature can help you get around.
Checking on the cost of Uber will help you budget better. You can estimate how much a ride will be here.
Budget Wisely
Set a daily spending limit and stick to it. Research affordable dining options and seek out free or discounted attractions and activities.
If you are booking a hotel or a homestay, look for ones that have grocery stores nearby. This will help you save a lot of money. You can schedule when to eat out to maximize your day.
Choosing to eat out during dinner or lunch is a great idea to spend wisely. For breakfast and other meals, including snacks, you can make your own sandwiches and pack your own snacks (from the grocery store) and enjoy it on your leisure time.
Stay Connected (Creating A Travel Itinerary)
Have access to maps, travel apps, and local emergency contacts. Consider getting a local SIM card or using international roaming services.
When creating itineraries, as you add the address of a destination, make sure you link that address to Google Maps so that when you click on it, whether you are walking or taking a cab, you can check where exactly are you going.
Staying connected also means that carrying a battery pack around will help avoid not having any means of connection. Using phone cases with lanyards also makes it easier for you to reach your phone when needed. Not to mention, it’s also less likely to be snatched since it is attached to you.
Stay Flexible
Allow room for spontaneous discoveries and changes in your itinerary. Embrace unexpected experiences that enrich your journey.
Safety First
Keep copies of important documents and emergency contacts. Avoid unsafe areas, especially at night, and stay vigilant in crowded tourist spots.
Know which spots you have to be extra vigilant in. Fanny packs with your wallet and passport is always a great idea.
If you are traveling solo, purchasing safety gear will help you feel more confident.
Another thing I always suggest is investing in a camera so you won’t use your phone for shooting in a crowded area.
Pack Light
Travel with essentials to avoid lugging heavy bags. Check the weather forecast and pack versatile clothing suitable for different activities.
When you pack light, it also creates less confusion. Fewer items, less stress and confusion.
Stay Organized (Creating A Travel Itinerary)
Use travel apps or a physical planner to keep track of reservations, flight details, and daily plans. Share your itinerary with a trusted friend or family member.
Booking.Com and GetYourGuide can help you keep things organized as they can all be downloaded in the app on your phone.
However, on top of having those on my phone, I always suggest that also having a printed version will always be helpful. You can print them and staple them together and flip them as you go. This is much more efficient than opening up your phone and scanning it or tapping it.
Depending on where you are traveling, I don’t always trust tapping my phone on devices. Having them printed made me look like an old person, but I felt so much safer and more confident.
