Banff Canadian Rockies Trip
What to pack:
- LAYERED CLOTHING: Banff’s weather can be unpredictable (Welcome to Canada!), so pack layers to adapt to changing temperatures throughout the day.
- COMFORTABLE SHOES: Whether you’re hiking trails or exploring town, comfortable footwear is essential. If you are heading there during the winter months, even early and late spring, as long as there is still now, consider purchasing ice cleats (crampons) to ensure better traction when hiking or walking through snow.
- CAMERA GEAR: Don’t forget your camera, lenses, and accessories to capture Banff’s stunning scenery. If you are planning to use your smartphone to document your trip, a tripod or a stabilizer will help you capture your journey. Selfie sticks are also great, however, it can get windy. High-quality gear that will stand the winds and whatever the season brings.
- WATER AND SNACKS: Stay hydrated and fueled for your adventures with water and portable snacks. The drive from Calgary to Banff does not really have a lot of available stops to purchase water and snacks.
- WASHROOMS: The drive from Calgary to Banff can run around 2 hours. There will be random washrooms placed around the trip at a 30-minute interval. However, it is always better to pace out your beverage consumption if you tend to have the need to go to the washroom. Purchasing travel emergency washroom packs can help as a backup when you really need to go.
- SUN PROTECTION: Pack sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat to shield yourself from the sun’s rays. Umbrellas are also a great idea, however, as mentioned earlier, it can be windy and if your umbrella is not sturdy enough, it will just get blown away.
- BATTERY PACKS: For all your gear, it will help to have battery packs. Sure you can charge in your vehicle, but having battery packs is always great to have a backup.
- SAFETY ITEMS: If you’ve seen my other trips, I always carry my personal alarm with a flashlight to help draw attention just in case something happens. I also always carry a heavy-duty foldable umbrella that I can easily pull out to use in self-defense. As always, taking a self-defense class helps with your self-confidence and vigilance.
- IMPORTANT DOCUMENTS: I’ve always been a big fan of Lululemon Belt Bags as they keep my passport and wallets safe and close to my body at all times. It’s also easy to take off and put back on at the airport security line.
- EMERGENCY NUMBERS: Having emergency numbers for any location you are visiting is always a great idea. I used this reference when I went on my trip. I didn’t use them (thankfully!) but having them on my phone made me feel safer somehow.
- LIP BALMS: It can be cold, windy, and dry. Sometimes, all at the same time. Your lips will be the first to feel that. Have your fave lip balm ready when needed.

Banff Canadian Rockies Trip: Tour Tips:
- Find trips that are smaller in number. 6-7 people are manageable. It’s enough people to be comfortable and still enjoy the trip.
- Ask for the details of the trip. What vehicle are they using? How many people are on the tour?
- Read reviews. As you can imagine, the tour guide really helps with your experience. We were lucky that our tour guide was ah-mazing. For the drive that we did, he was able to entertain us with stories and nice jams. It also helped that the rest of the group had great stories of their own and it was an overall great experience.

Taking photos and videos:
Banff is mostly landscape. If you’d like to capture all of them, learning a few tricks will help you document your trip better. Here are some easy tips to get you started:
- USE TRIPOD OR STABILIZER: Keep your smartphone steady when shooting landscapes by using a tripod or stabilizing accessory. This helps to reduce camera shake and ensures sharp, blur-free images, especially in low-light conditions or long-exposure shots.
- EXPLORE DIFFERENT PERSPECTIVES: Get creative with your smartphone photography by exploring different perspectives and angles. Experiment with low angles, high angles, and unique viewpoints to capture Banff’s landscapes from fresh and interesting perspectives.
- POSITION YOUR CAMERA SOMEWHERE: Place your smartphone (while it’s on a tripod) securely at a spot that captures the whole landscape. Start recording a video and walk further into the shot. Walk around and pose slowly as you’d like. Then from the video, you can screenshot the ones you like.
- SHOOT LOW: Lower your phone but tilt the camera a little upwards. This way you can capture more height since the mountains are really tall.
- ZOOM OUT. Try the 0.5 zoom out so you can capture more landscape especially if you are taking a selfie.
- USE PANORAMA MODE: Capture the vastness of Banff’s landscapes by using the panorama mode on your smartphone. Sweep your phone across the scene while keeping it steady to create a wide, panoramic image. Using a stabilizer phone holder will help you take this shot.
- PLAN YOUR SHOTS: Research iconic locations in Banff such as Moraine Lake, Lake Louise, and Peyto Lake to plan your photography itinerary. Check here to see if these lakes are open and accessible.
- PRACTICE: Try these all out at home before leaving so you know the buttons and the angles that you are going for. This way you won’t miss a good shot.
Banff Canadian Rockies Trip
The town of Banff is beautiful. Everything looks like a wallpaper. Amazing scenery. In terms of shopping and food choices, there isn’t a lot.
As you know I am gluten-free and dairy-free and I ate at Nourish Bistro. They have lots of great and delicious options. I had a ramen salad and chocolate orange ice cream for dessert at a decent price. I loved it!
I was focused on my Lake Louise, Moraine Lake, Bow Falls, and Johnston Canyon experiences. Those were my top 4. All the other things included in the trip were extra and I loved them all.
My MAIN goal was to walk over the frozen Lake Louise and take in the vibe and the beauty. It was a perfect one-day experience for me.
Don’t expect the malls in Banff to have a lot of selections. You will find decent shops and some great restaurants. However, there isn’t so much around the town.
Skiing and other winter activities are also available at other resorts if you are interested. For your Banff Canadian Rockies Trip, knowing which activity you are focused on will help you plan your trip better. If you are only going for the weekend, you can’t obviously do everything. Narrowing down your choices can help you enjoy things better and not rush through each experience.
Overall, a one-day Banff Canadian Rockies Trip is an excellent way to experience the best of what this iconic destination has to offer. With its breathtaking landscapes, outdoor activities, and memorable experiences, Banff is sure to leave a lasting impression.
